Just some feedback after working in schools for 37 years: There are SO MANY parents who mess up the times of attendance notes, main reason being; they think the start and finish time is for when their child is ATTENDING. If you changed the name of the note to be an ABSENCE NOTE, this would make it clear to parents that it was the start and finish times for the ABSENCE that they're entering. Not when they're at school!! The note is really for an ABSENCE, not an Attendance. Compass Support said: "The guidelines for the Attendance Note comes from the Department of Education. We have taken guidance from them, however please do reach out to them regarding your concerns. I am sure they will welcome all feedback." Department of Education guidelines govern attendance recording. We regularly have parents enter the times incorrectly because they understandably interpret “Start Time” and “End Time” on an Attendance Note as the period their child will be attending school. In practice, the parent is entering the start and end time of the absence. Not trying to be pedantic but the DET Policy Advisory Library (PAL) says: Parents are required to ensure their child attends school and to provide an explanation for their child's absence from school…” It goes on to say: “Parents must promptly inform the school of the reason for their child's absence…” and: “Where possible, parents must inform the school in advance of upcoming absences.” So they use the term 'absence', I don't see why Compass can't. In the Student Enrolment Census policy, it says: “Principals must ensure that all records relating to attendance are retained … These records (such as manual rolls and absence notes)…” So “absence note” is terminology the Department itself uses. Changing the parent-facing wording to “Absence Note”, or even labelling the fields “Absence Start Time” and “Absence End Time”, would make their meaning much clearer and reduce incorrect attendance records and administrative work for schools.
